In Vedic astrology, Mars (Mangal) represents energy, courage, passion, assertiveness, competition and the way a person expresses anger. Because marriage requires cooperation, patience and emotional balance, a strongly placed or afflicted Mars can sometimes contribute to arguments, impatience, ego clashes and recurring disagreements between partners.
However, Mars in a particular house does not automatically mean divorce or marital separation. A complete horoscope must always be examined before reaching any conclusion about marriage.
Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 8th and 12 th House
Mars occupying certain houses is traditionally associated with Mangal Dosha (Manglik Dosha), depending on the astrological system and the reference point used for assessment. The 1st, 4th, 7th and 8th houses are among the positions commonly considered while evaluating Mangal Dosha.
The 7th house is particularly important because it represents marriage, spouse and partnerships. Mars connected strongly with the 7th house may indicate a relationship dynamic in which both partners are highly assertive, passionate or unwilling to compromise. In some charts, this can manifest as frequent arguments or impatience; in others, the same Mars energy may be expressed as passion, courage, mutual motivation and the ability to face challenges together.
Therefore, it is important not to interpret Mangal Dosha in isolation.
Mars and Rahu in Relationship Astrology
The situation requires greater attention when Mars and Rahu become connected with the 7th house, 7th lord or Venus. In traditional Vedic astrology, Rahu can amplify desires, intensity, unconventional relationship patterns and emotional extremes, while Mars adds heat, competitiveness and impulsiveness.
Depending on the complete horoscope, this combination may correspond with periods of heightened disagreements, frustration, possessiveness or sudden conflicts. But it should not be treated as a guaranteed divorce combination.
An experienced astrologer will examine the strength and condition of the 7th house, the 7th lord, Venus, Mars and Rahu, along with the Navamsa (D9) chart and planetary periods (Dasha). 1. Mars — the classic Kuja/Mangal Dosha placement
Mars sits directly on the Ascendant in Taurus. Mars in the 1st house from Lagna is one of the standard positions counted for Kuja (Mangal) Dosha — traditionally read as friction, impatience, and a strong independent will that can clash with a partner’s need for accommodation. Because Mars is also the lord of the 7th house of marriage (Scorpio), having the 7th lord placed back in the 1st house is a recognised marker: the significator of “the other” (spouse) gets pulled into the house of “self.” In classical interpretation this often shows a person whose identity, career, and personal drive overshadow the partnership — the marriage tends to orbit around the native’s own path rather than being a true 50/50 axis. It doesn’t guarantee a hostile split, but it does point to a marriage where the spouse’s role gets subordinated to the native’s own trajectory — which fits a woman who continued building a major film career independent of her husband’s wishes.
Checked from Moon and from Venus, Mars does not fall into a dosha-triggering house (it’s 5th from Moon, 10th from Venus), so the Mangal Dosha here is specifically a Lagna-based one — self-centred friction rather than a violent or hostile-spouse indicator.
2. Rahu — the real flashpoint, via the 7th house from Moon
Rahu itself sits in the 3rd house from Lagna, but its more telling position is measured from the Moon (Chandra Lagna), which is the standard secondary lens for marital analysis, especially in a woman’s chart. Moon is in Capricorn; counting seven signs from Capricorn lands exactly on Cancer — where Rahu sits, tightly conjunct exalted Jupiter and a combust Sun.
This is significant for three reasons:
- Rahu occupying the 7th-from-Moon is one of the more consistently cited markers for an unconventional partnership, sudden disillusionment, or a marriage that doesn’t follow a “normal” trajectory (separation without formal closure, for instance, rather than a clean divorce).
- Jupiter is the natural significator (karaka) of the husband in a woman’s chart. Here Jupiter is exalted (strong, dignified) but conjunct Rahu — a combination classical texts call Guru Chandal Yoga. Even an exalted Jupiter under Rahu’s influence tends to get “eclipsed”: the husband figure may be talented, elevated, even idealised (exaltation), but the relationship carries distortion, secrecy, or an outcome that doesn’t match surface appearances.
- Sun is also combust in this cluster, weakening its significations of authority/status within the domestic axis — consistent with a marriage where conventional domestic authority structures didn’t hold.
3. Reading the two together
- Mars on the Lagna gives the native an assertive, self-directed nature that resists being subsumed into a partner’s conditions.
- Rahu–Jupiter in the 7th-from-Moon gives an idealised but ultimately illusory or unconventional marital outcome — a husband who is admired and respected, yet a marital structure that doesn’t resolve in the ordinary way.
That combination — strong personal will (Mars/Lagna) meeting an unconventional, incompletely resolved marital house (Rahu/Jupiter) — maps closely onto what’s publicly known of her life: her decision to accept a major film role despite her husband’s objections is described as the beginning of the couple’s separation, and the couple separated but never formally divorced, continuing an unusually cordial, non-standard relationship afterward. That’s a very literal expression of a Rahu-touched 7th house: not a conventional clean break, but a suspended, non-standard resolution.
One caveat worth noting for accuracy: astrologically and biographically this reads better as a separation chart than a legal divorce chart — Rahu’s signature is ambiguity/incompleteness rather than a hard 8th-house-style severance, which fits the real record of an indefinite separation rather than a finalized divorce.

- D1 7th lord Saturn connected strongly with Venus.
- Saturn simultaneously rules the 7th and 8th.
- D9 7th house contains Rahu.
